Abstract: Objective To evaluate the safety and success rate of abdominal cordocentesis using a PTC needle under ultrasound guidance. Methods Cordocentesis was performed under ultrasound guidance in 103 pregnant women with indications of prenatal diagnosis. Results The success rate of cordocentesis was 98.1% (101/103). Abnormal chromosome karyotype was detected in 5, intrauterine cytomegalovirus infection in 2 and alpha-thalassemia major (Hb Barts disease) in 3 cases. Severe complications such as miscarriage, fetal death, placental abruption or intrauterine infection were not found after the operation. Conclusion Abdominal cordocentesis under ultrasound guidance is a safe and reliable approach for prenatal diagnosis.
