  • Guidelines for English Manuscript Submission

    Please read this before the submission of full-length English manuscripts.
    Journal of Southern Medical University publishes 1-3 high quality English articles in every issue.Thus, English manuscripts are highly welcome. Before submission, please download and read the “Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals” laid out by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) and make sure that your article complies with it.

    In order to save your time, speed up manuscript processing and shorten the publishing cycle, please read following guidelines and check whether your article meet our requirements before submission via our portal.

    Types of Contributions
    The journal provides a medium for publication of English articles on original medical research, including basic medicine, clinical medicine, epidemiologic study, etc., while case reports describing the diagnosis and treatment of clinically rare diseases or those of great clinical significance could also be taken into consideration. Review articles will not be considered as they are “invited” or “solicited” by the Editors.

    General Requirements of English Articles

    ·         Original papers describing original research of high novelty, practicality, or clinically guiding significance;

    ·         Research results (and any other components) that have never been published on other journals;

    ·         Does not involve any potential ethical problems;

    ·         Does not involve any potential conflicts of interest with other people or organizations;

    ·         Research projects supported by funding on provincial level and above, and the funding’s name and number specified in both Chinese and English

    e.g. National Natural Science Foundation of China (81000989) // Supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China (81000989)

    ·         Written in good English with no spelling mistakes (American or British usage is accepted, but not a mixture of them). Please note that article with considerable grammatical or spelling errors won’t be able to enter the peer-review stage. Therefore, meticulous proofreading and modification by professionals are highly recommended.

    Author names and affiliations.
    Bylines should include all those who have participated in the project research. All authors should be notified and agreed to the publication of the article on our journal. To facilitate indexing and retrieval and for unique identification of an author, use family names (all caps) and given names (first letter in cap). For example: ZHANG Li or SONG Jianwu.If the author affiliation entertains cooperation with any overseas research institution, a written acknowledgement by that institution indicating its agreement to the article’s publication on our journal and a statement of no conflicts of interest should be submitted.
    To avoid potential disputes, the acknowledgement file should be signed by both the corresponding author and all other authors.Pleasedownload the file from our website and upload the scanned signed form in package with other compulsory files).
    The corresponding English translation of the author affiliation should be that authorized by the institution, and our journal does not take responsibility for any mistranslation made by the author.

    File Formats
    Please consult formerly published articles on our journal and modify your article’s format, and special attention should be paid to following aspects:

    ·         Font type and size:

    The manuscript should be organized in a small 4-point Times New Roman font for the main body and 3-point Times New Roman font in bold for the title.

    ·         Quantities and units of measurement:

    Please standardize your use of quantities and units. For example, the English abbreviations of hour, minute and second are h, min and s. Leave a space between the quantity and the unit of measurement.

    ·         Tables:

    Tables should be numbered in the order in which they are mentioned in the text, and given a brief, descriptive title. Tables should be concise and exact.
    Glossy prints and reduced versions of typewritten tables are unacceptable. All acronyms, abbreviations, and unusual units of measurement in the title, headings, or body of the table should be fully explained in a footnote. If a table or any data therein have been previously published, a footnote to the table must give full credit to the original source.
    Use 5-point Times New Roman font for the title, headings and body of the table. Normally, there should be no more than 4 tables in one manuscript.

    ·         Illustrations:

    Use 5-point Times New Roman font for the picture title and legends and small 5-point Times New Roman font for texts in figures. For better figure clarity, it is strongly recommended that all figures are compressed while uploading in package with other files. Please indicate the magnification factor and stanning method for micrographs.

    ·         Abstract:

    A structural abstract of no more than 250 words must accompany the manuscript and consist of four paragraphs, each with its introductory label: Objective, Methods, Results and Conclusion. It should state concisely the scientific problem(s) or hypotheses addressed in the Article, the approach taken to resolve it, and the key results.

    ·         Abbreviation:

    Standard abbreviations should be used consistently throughout the manuscript. The term should be spelled out in full the first time it appears, followed immediately by the abbreviation in parentheses. The abbreviation only should be used from that point on.

    ·         References:

    Please ensure that every reference cited in the text is also present in the reference list (and vice versa). Any references cited in the abstract must be given in full. Unpublished results and personal communications are not recommended in the reference list, but may be mentioned in the text. If these references are included in the reference list they should follow the standard reference style of the journal and should include a substitution of the publication date with either ’Unpublished results’ or ’Personal communication’. Citation of a reference as ’in press’ implies that the item has been accepted for publication.
    Please indicate the category of the reference by [J], [M], [OL], etc. immediately after its title. For example: Mcpherson JP, Lemmers B, Chahwan R, et al. Involvement of mammalian Mus81 in genome integrity and tumor suppression [J]. Science, 2004, 304(5678): 1822-6.
    Please indicate references by number(s) in square brackets in line with the text and use abbreviations for journals stipulated on Medline (do not add dots after abbreviations, e.g. Can Res instead of Can. Res.). Please use references published in recent years and the total number should be controlled preferably between 25 and 40.
    Only English punctuation marks can be used in this section.

    Other Supporting Documents

    ·         Chinese abstract:

    To facilitate article search at home, a Chinese abstract completely consistent with that in English should be submitted and will be published at the end of the full-length English article. Main contents include title, author affiliation, abstract, keywords, information of author and corresponding author.

    ·         Chinese description:

    To shorten the review period, the author needs to provide a Chinese description of the article stating the innovation and significance of his/her research, with emphasis on the relevant research progress abroad, main research methods, outcome and conclusions, practical application value and theoretical significance, etc. This section does not have a word limit (preferably no less than 800 words), and it should be noted that it will not be published.

    Acknowledgement
    We highly value the originality of articles we publish and have taken measures to avoid potential academic misconduct. Therefore, the author needs to fill in an acknowledgement form ( click here to download ) stating that he/she observes most strictly the rules against dual publication and has agreed to publish this article. After completion, pack this form with other files and upload the package via our submission portal. It is after the receipt of the acknowledgment file that we start processing the manuscript.

    所有署名作者必须参与课题研究,且明确知晓和同意在我刊发表此论文。署名作者单位若涉及境外科研合作机构,还必须提供该机构同意在我刊发表的书面声明,并明确声明不存在任何潜在利益纠纷。为避免不必要的潜在各方纠纷,我们需要您提供通讯作者和所有署名作者同意发表该文的亲笔签名(请从我刊主页下载空白“声明”文件,手工填写、扫描后与稿件材料等一并打包上传)。作者单位的相应英译应采用单位认可的译法。因作者误译而产生的后果本刊无法负责,请认真对待。作者单位书写的具体格式要求请查阅我刊杂志。

    版式要求
    文章的格式请参照我刊之前发表的文章进行修改并规范化,尤其需要注意的是:
    ·字体字号:投稿正文全文均统一使用Times New Roman字体,小4号字排版;文题用三号字并加粗。表格、图片的文字另行说明。
    量和单位:量和单位应规范化书写,一般采用国际单位制。不能以M代替mol/L,时间单位“小时”、“分钟”、“秒”应分别用英文简写 h、min、s表示;不可以用u代替μ;而摄氏温度单位℃则应以oC代替)。量和单位之间必须空一格。
    ·关于表格:表格的设计要简明合理,一般使用三线表。数据较少时(如只有不足5个数据)请改用文字描述。涉及统计描述时,表格下方以表注的形式说明主要的统计量值,表中相应数据加以标记(如用*,**等)。表题、表注和表中文字一律使用Times New Roman字体,5号字。表格的数量应严格控制,一般以不超过4个为宜。
    ·关于图片:图题、图注一律使用Times New Roman字体,5号字;图中文字使用小5号字。我刊全刊采用随文彩印,为保证印刷质量,图片必须有足够的清晰度。大体或显微照片最好存成独立的图片文件与修改稿的Word文件一并上传。显微照片必须注明放大倍数和染色方法。直方图、曲线图等应比例协调美观,可用不同颜色区分组别。图片的数量也应控制,能够组合的图片必须组合成一张图片。
    ·关于摘要:摘要采用结构式摘要,包括目的、方法、结果、结论(Objective, Methods, Results, Conclusion)。摘要应反映文章的主要内容(尤其是使用的主要方法、主要结果和结论;如无特殊必要, “目的”前不必叙述背景内容),字数应控制在250字以内。
    ·关于缩写:文中的缩写应使用公知公认的形式。正文中首次使用某一缩写时,应首先写明其全称,括号内注明缩写,之后一律使用该缩写而不能再使用全称。摘要中也同样处理。文题中也尽量使用全称,只有在使用全称会造成题目过长或阅读困难时才使用缩写,且此缩写应为同行认可,否则仍建议使用全称。
    ·参考文献:参考文献的具体格式请参照我刊近期杂志,文题后应用[J]、[M]、[OL]等注明期刊属性(分别对应期刊、书籍和网上文献)。例:Mcpherson JP, Lemmers B, Chahwan R, et al. Involvement of mammalian Mus81 in genome integrity and tumor suppression [J]. Science, 2004, 304(5678): 1822-6. 请注意文献中只能使用英文标点符号。刊名使用缩写,具体缩写方式以Medline上的检索结果为准,缩写后不要加点(如要写成Can Res,而非Can. Res.);人名的写法也应以Medline收录时的写法为准。应尽量引用近年文献,数量上以不低于25篇为宜,最好不超过40篇。

    其他必须提交的重要材料
    ·中文摘要:为便于国内读者和文献收录机构的检索,我们要求全英文文章提供与英文完全一致的中文文题、作者单位、中文摘要、关键词、第一作者和通信作者信息(学历、职称、研究方向、联系方式等),具体要求与中文稿件相同,发表于文章末尾处。
    ·对稿件的中文说明:英文稿件的审稿目前主要在国内进行。为节省审稿教授的时间,降低劳动强度,使其更明确领会文意(有时英文文字表达问题会造成很大的理解障碍),我们要求作者提供对研究创新性和意义的中文说明。说明中应包括国际上的研究进展,主要研究方法,主要的结果、结论,以及结果的实际应用价值和理论意义,研究结果的先进性等。说明文字字数不拘,以能说明问题为度,但建议不要少于800字。该说明性文字不作为发表之用。

    声明 我们非常重视论文的原创性,也在采取措施避免各种潜在的学术不端行为。为此我们需要您填写一份关于本文没有一稿多投和所有署名作者均同意发表此文的声明,填写好后将扫描件与稿件、图片等材料一并打包上传。 只有确认收到声明文件我们才会对文章进行下一步处理,所以请务必重视。为避免文件上传时出现问题,所有材料(修改稿、图片、声明)请一并打包为一个压缩文件上传。
